Now Viewing: killer_instinctTag type: Copyright Covers the entire series. 2d fighting game franchise created by Rareware. The original game debuted in 1994 in the arcades. The franchise consists of three games, Killer Instinct 1, Killer Instinct 2, and Killer Instinct 2013. The franchise was thought to be finished for a long time thanks to Rareware leaving Nintendo, but Double Helix revived the series with KI 2013 for the Xbox One. This game also features a guest character, Rash, from another long defunct Rare series, Battletoads. Like Rare's platformer franchise Donkey Kong Country, the series is known for being one of the earliest 2d games to be feature 3d graphics and as well as one of the earliest 2D fighting games with 3D graphics. The SNES port of the first game had to tone down the visuals to fit the SNES's capabilities making the game look more like Donkey Kong Country visually. The series was often promoted as Nintendo's answer to Mortal Kombat, being a darker and more violent fighting game in contrast to most other fighting games at the time. Despite the bloody carnage, the games' finishing moves were less gruesome than Mortal Kombat's. In lieu of grisly finishing moves, the games allowed the player to finish his/her opponent with a brutal beat down combo which can go above 80 hits. In some stages, it is also possible for players to finish their opponents off by knocking them off. While combos were present in fighting games prior to Killer Instinct, the series is also known for taking them much further; its gameplay is based around combos and combo breakers and the games' announcer will often bombastically describe the combos with one word exclamations as the characters performed them with Ultra Combo being the highest. The announcer's delivery of Ultra is also the most bombastic and comes with an echo effect. The games are also the originator of the "C-C-C-C-C-Combo Breaker!" meme which is what the announcer yells when a character does just that. Online, the meme is used to refer to an established pattern/trend being suddenly broken. The games lack an official round 2 or round three setup. Unlike a lot of fighting games that have the screen fade to black and fade back in after an opponent's health bar is depleted, in this series the winner will back up a bit while the loser of the first round gets back up and has his/her health bar refill; the winner's health bar does not refill.
